HOTEL VIKING GOES GREEN
~First Newport, Rhode Island Hotel to Receive Green Certification~
The Historic Hotel Viking is the first Newport hotel to be named “Green Certified” by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. After a lengthy application process and subsequent retrofitting of green standards, the Hotel Viking now not only aims to provide exceptional quality services for guests, but also is committed to the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the local, national and global environment for future generations.
A selection of new standards and practices is detailed below:
· Adopted and displaying an environmental policy
· Complimentary parking for hybrid cars
· Developing a “Green” meeting package
· Using 30% recycled paper
· Recycling laser and ink jet cartridges
· 25%-75% of produce, dairy and meats from Rhode Island farms
· 25%-75% of seafood aligns with sustainable recommendations
· 75%-100% of salmon served is wild, not farm raised
· Using biodegradable detergents that contain no phosphates
· Recycling paper, cardboard and fluorescent lightbulbs
· Eliminated the use of styrofoam throughout the hotel
· Recycling used cooking oil with a Biodiesel company
· Adopted a water conservation policy for guest room laundry
· Upgraded all toilets to be 1.6 gallons per flush
· Converted to compact fluorescent lightbulbs in guest rooms and wherever else possible
· Complying with the RI Diesel Engine Anti-Idling Act
· Growing its own herbs for the restaurant
· Installing programmable thermostats
· Eliminated water bottle coolers
· Forming an environmental committee that is sure to find more ways to be green
Mark Gervais, general manager, had this to say, “Our goal is to preserve our historic hotel, our neighborhood and our planet, through consistent steps that lessen our impact on the environment. Hopefully, our environmental initiatives will provide a venue and platform in which “green” can grow.
